Sports on Wheels

Another popular way to see the Malta countryside and all its green-shaded beauty is by bike. A bike tour around the roads and dirt tracks makes for a great cardiovascular workout, and a bike makes for a very versatile means of transportation - no need for a horse and his upkeep, and the horse stays happy in his stable. The Malta landscape is ideal for a bike jaunt: there are rough tracks for the more adventurous and little rustic cobblestone village paths for those who want to observe the simple nuances of country life. Many such tracks and paths lead to scenic hideaways. Malta Island has more paved country roads that make for easier traversal, while Gozo is more rural with fewer roads and less vehicle traffic.

For the tourists who want to see the Maltese countryside but are on a tight schedule, there are jeep safaris and a number of car hire companies. Jeep safaris take the countryside tour to the off-road level, traveling over very rough tracks to get to far and out-of-the-way viewpoints and sites. Most safaris are package events; that is, they include predetermined stops for meals and refreshments. Alternatively, visitors can opt to rent a car. When touring in this manner, travelers are afforded comfort, a little bit of privacy, and a pace that is all their own.
